If you remember the 1980s hip hop legends Eric B. & Rakim you will instantly understand the title of the current exhibition at the Kunstraum Kreuzberg / Bethanien.
The group show “Let the Rhythm Hit’em” refers to their 1990 album and its title song and connects music with Fine Arts in a proverbial way. At the opening on Friday the 4th of November 2011 you could feel the rhythm of the works.
46 artists whose works oscillate between music and visual art want to question how sound, music and image are related to one another. How are visual artists influenced by contemporary music? Some successful answers to this question can be observed in the sound installation “Onomatopeia” by Jan Christensen, Anders Fjosne and Marcel Dickhage. The visitors are allowed to spontaneously create, perform and interact with the music performance.

The performances, often unique events, were documented on video. As testament to this idea are presented numerous ephemeral videos. Due to the challenging recordings and meditative sound and color games, you can feel the connections between sound and image, space, time and narrative.
Surprisingly the artists still use good old outmoded turntables – often with a modified functionality.
In Jacob Jensen’s original work “Rock is my life, and this is my song” rotates a stone happily on top of a turntable. If you give the work enough attention, you will realize that the little rock always hits the needle at the same spot, and thus pushes the song steadily back to the starting point. This must be true “Rock” passion.
Despite or perhaps because of the overstimulation, ARTCONNECT BERLIN recommends the exhibition “Let the Rhythm Hit’em”, which runs until the 15th of january 2012 at the Kunstraum Kreuzberg/ Bethanien.
